What Is an Empty Leg Flight?
An empty leg (also known as a ferry flight) occurs when an aircraft needs to reposition without passengers.
This usually happens when:
- A jet drops passengers at a destination and needs to fly back to its home base
- An aircraft is repositioning to pick up its next charter
- A charter is booked one-way, leaving the return flight empty
Rather than flying empty, operators offer these legs at a significantly reduced rate.
